“Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue.” —Congressman Bill Richardson
There are several small easy steps men can take to prevent health problems and live longer, healthier lives. We have highlighted a few below from Dr. Oz’s 25 Greatest Health Tips in Men’s Health Magazine.
Surround Yourself with Funny People
It’s simple: laughter reduces stress. In turn, it drops your heart rate, lowers your blood pressure and may also boost your immune system. Laughing also promotes social bonding, so don’t isolate yourself. Women, typically, are more apt to form tight social networks and talk about their problems with others, which reduces stress. Confronting life’s challenges with another will lessen the toll of stress on your body and mind.
Sweat it Out
Sweating for even an hour each week yields a variety of health benefits, including reduced risk of heart attack, better mood and lower blood pressure. To build muscle mass and burn calories, try lifting weights for 30 minutes twice a week.
Remember to Breathe
Stop for a moment to take a deep breath. Inhale through your nose and fill your lungs. This will open up your blood vessels and the rush of oxygen will make you feel happier and more alert. Yoga is also a great way to practice good breathing technique as well as challenge your body to work in a new way. Like laughing, yoga reduces stress, slows your heart rate and lowers blood pressure. It also increases flexibility by loosening muscles.
Be Your Own Iron Chef
You don’t have to be a master of the kitchen to see the health benefits of cooking your own meals. Cooking at home not only saves money, but you are also able to control what goes into your meals. Incorporate foods with bright rich colors into your diet. They’re full of powerful compounds that help reduce inflammation.
