Fun Ways to Stay Active This Summer

During the summer, it’s easy to forego your regular gym routine for the many distractions that warm weather brings along. Fortunately, you don’t have to hit the gym every day to stay in shape. Summertime is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the fun activities available outdoors, either on vacation or at home. Whether you prefer to cool off in the water, partake in friendly competition or enjoy some leisurely activity, there are many ways to burn calories without frequenting your fitness center.

Staying active

The beach, lake and pool are popular spots to escape the summer heat. If you’re feeling adventurous, try surfing lessons or scuba diving. If scuba doesn’t appeal to you, try snorkeling instead. Both are great ways to explore the beauty of the ocean while cooling off and burning calories. Prefer freshwater to saltwater? Rent a kayak or paddleboard and enjoy a leisurely outing on the lake. You’ll be able to take in your tranquil surroundings while working your core and toning your arms. Dive in to torch additional calories and reap the benefits of an aerobic workout.

If you’re sporty in spirit and enjoy a good cardio workout, gather some friends for a game of beach volleyball or badminton. You could also hit the tennis court or golf course to rev your heart rate and work your arms. If you’re on vacation, sightsee by bike or horseback, or even break out a pair of roller blades. Biking, horseback riding and in-line skating, even at a slow pace, burn more calories than walking. They are also great ways to catch a breeze while toning your legs and glutes.

If you’re staying around the house, other low-key outdoor activities can sneakily burn calories and work unexpected muscles. Gardening and lawn games don’t seem like rigorous activity, but squatting low to the ground while tending to your garden or picking up bean bags and balls during a game of cornhole or Bocce is great for your glutes and thighs. Frisbee is another fun and casual outdoor activity that helps keep you fit. Gather your friends and family for a competitive game of ultimate frisbee and you can burn over 250 calories in 30 minutes. Even regular chores such as mowing the lawn can have health benefits by increasing heart rate and working leg muscles.

Take advantage of the beautiful weather by incorporating outdoor activity into your summer plans. For details on the muscles worked and calories burned for each of the above activities, check Health Magazine’s 17 Easy Ways to Burn Calories All Day.
