OsteoCool

What Is OsteoCool?

OsteoCool™ RF Ablation employs a technique known as cooled radiofrequency ablation (RFA). This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat bone tumors, particularly metastatic bone tumors which originated from cancer in other parts of the body. The OsteoCool procedure can help alleviate pain and stabilize bone with smaller incisions, less tissue damage and shorter recovery times compared to traditional surgical approaches.

How OsteoCool Works

OsteoCool delivers radiofrequency energy directly to the tumor to heat and destroy cancerous cells. The ablation probe is internally cooled to reduce the risk of damaging adjacent structures.

Procedure Steps

  1. Patient Preparation: The patient is positioned on an examination table, and the area where the tumor is located is cleaned and sterilized.
  2. Guidance and Imaging: Using advanced imaging techniques like X-ray or CT scans, the interventional radiologist identifies the precise location of the tumor. This provides a real-time view to guide the procedure.
  3. Local Anesthesia: A local anesthetic is administered to numb the area around the tumor. This helps minimize any potential discomfort during the procedure.
  4. Needle Insertion: A specialized needle is inserted through a small incision directly into the tumor. The needle is typically guided using continuous imaging to ensure accurate placement.
  5. Radiofrequency Ablation: Once the needle is in the correct position, radiofrequency energy is delivered through the needle into the tumor. This energy generates heat, which effectively destroys the tumor cells.
  6. Monitoring and Confirmation: Throughout the procedure, the interventional radiologist monitors the temperature and progress of the ablation in real-time using imaging technology.
  7. Vertebrae Stabilization: When the entire tumor has been treated and the ablation is complete, a Kyphoplasty is done to stabilize the pathologic vertebral body that has been compromised or fractured. This will fill and support the vertebral body to prevent its collapse. The small incision site is typically closed with a bandage.

It's important to note that the specifics of the procedure may vary based on your individual factors and the preferences of the medical team performing the intervention. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized information and guidance.

OsteoCool Recovery

Patients are typically observed for a short period following the procedure to monitor for any immediate complications. You may be able to return home on the same day.
