There are a variety of methods used to sample breast tissue. Ultrasound breast biopsy is an accurate, fairly quick method of analyzing breast irregularities without invasive surgery or exposure to X-rays to locate the mass. Ultrasound breast biopsy technology uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of the inside of the breast. The ultrasound machine uses the echoes of pulsing or continuous sound waves to depict the breast tissue without the use of radiation. Physicians typically suggest a biopsy procedure after an ultrasound reveals a suspicious mass.
The Breast Center of Greensboro Imaging is committed to providing you with quality care, which includes providing accurate information and educational materials to help you understand and make informed decisions about your health.
With the patient lying on her back or turned on her side, the radiologist administers local anesthesia to the breast. Using an ultrasound probe to locate the abnormal tissue, the radiologist guides a hollow needle into the mass to obtain tissue samples for analysis. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes. Most patients report little or no pain during the procedure. Patients are typically able to return to their normal routine the same day.
To prepare for the procedure, the physician may ask patients who take aspirin or another form of blood thinner to stop taking it three days in advance of the biopsy. Though it is not necessary, a patient may want to bring a friend or family member to lend support and provide a ride home following the procedure.
Every day, DRI Greensboro strives to ensure patients have the best possible experience before, during and after their exams and procedures. It shows in patient feedback.
