What is Radioactive Seed Localization?
Radioactive Seed Localization is an advanced procedure that allows our specialists to precisely target and remove small breast cancer tumors. It’s more convenient for patients and offers less risk to healthy tissue than the previous standard procedure, wire localization.
What’s involved?
The affected breast is numbed with a local anesthetic and a tiny low-dose radioactive seed is inserted at the tumor site. Within the next five days, a skilled surgeon locates and removes the seed with the abnormal tissue. Most patients are able to return home that day.
Patient Benefits
- Accurately pinpoints the tumor location
- Reduces the need for a second surgery due to incomplete removal of abnormal tissue
- Can be inserted up to five days before the procedure for easier scheduling
- Does not require uncomfortable wire insertion
- Protects healthy breast tissue and surrounding organs
Who is eligible?
Most breast cancer surgery patients are eligible for Radioactive Seed Localization except:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding patients
- Patients with large lesions
- Patients with multiple lesions
