Understanding Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)
What Is Digital Breast Tomosynthesis?
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), also known as 3D mammography, is an advanced form of breast imaging that creates a three-dimensional view of breast tissue. Unlike traditional 2D mammograms that capture a flat image, tomosynthesis uses multiple X-ray images taken from different angles to build a detailed layer-by-layer picture of the breast.
At DRI Health Group, our breast imaging specialists use digital breast tomosynthesis to detect breast abnormalities earlier and with greater precision—especially in women with dense breast tissue.
How Tomosynthesis Works
During a tomosynthesis exam, the mammography machine moves in a small arc over the breast, capturing multiple low-dose images. A computer then reconstructs these “slices” into a 3D image that radiologists can scroll through one layer at a time.
This allows radiologists to see through overlapping tissue and spot small cancers that might be hidden in a standard 2D image.
Benefits of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis
- Earlier and more accurate detection: DBT improves the visualization of small tumors and reduces the number of false positives.
- Reduced need for callbacks: Because images are clearer, fewer patients are called back for additional imaging.
- Better for dense breast tissue: 3D mammography is more effective at revealing potential abnormalities in dense tissue, which is particularly common in young women.
- Comfortable and fast: The process takes just a few seconds longer than a traditional mammogram, with similar positioning and compression.
3D Mammography vs. 2D Mammography
| Feature | 2D Mammogram | 3D Mammogram (Tomosynthesis) |
|---|---|---|
| Image Type | Flat, single image | Multi-layer, 3D reconstruction |
| Detection Rate | May miss small cancers | Detects up to 40% more cancers |
| Callbacks | More common | Significantly reduced |
| Comfort | Standard | Nearly identical experience |
Who Should Consider Digital Breast Tomosynthesis?
Tomosynthesis is recommended for most women, especially those who:
- Have dense breast tissue
- Are at average or increased risk of breast cancer
- Want the most advanced screening available
Your provider may also recommend DBT if you’ve had inconclusive mammograms in the past or if you’re undergoing diagnostic follow-up imaging.
What to Expect During Your 3D Mammogram at DRI
Your tomosynthesis exam will feel much like a traditional mammogram. The technologist will position your breast, apply gentle compression and capture images in seconds. The entire appointment typically takes less than 20 minutes, and results are interpreted by our board-certified radiologists specialized in breast imaging.
The DRI Difference
At DRI, we combine cutting-edge technology with compassionate, patient-focused care. Our digital breast tomosynthesis services help patients gain clarity and confidence about their breast health and detect breast cancer in its early stages—because early detection saves lives.
Breast Health Screening with 3D Tomosynthesis
Digital breast tomosynthesis is advancing preventive screening and making early treatment possible for so many women. With greater accuracy and fewer callbacks, 3D scans empower women and their providers to make informed decisions about how to move forward if further testing or treatment is needed.
